Sakura it to me!
So the Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) are in full bloom over here in sunny, warm Nippon. The air is warm and fragrant, the sounds of happy children playing are everywhere, and people are sitting under the Sakura trees enjoying the sheer beauty of the weather and the blossoms. I, on the other hand, am sitting in school with a massive hangover wishing that the toilet was a lot closer to me than half way across the school.
In fact though, the Sakura is the reason for my hangover today. You see, the Japanese people have a custom of having something called Hanami parties during Sakura season. Essentially you get a group of people together on a sunny day and sit under the cherry blossoms and appreciate their beauty. Sounds innocent enough, except for the fact that drinking profusely is pretty much mandatory. We started at around two and soon a large group of both foreigners and Japanese people was gathered under the blossoms chugging back beer and grilling tons of good food on the BBQ. It was an amazing time and really put into perspective again how many amazing people I have met in Japan – which I then proceed to express to these amazing people by repeatedly proclaiming my love for all of them and then physically molesting them to show them I meant business. I also wrestled many more people than I would care to remember just now, especially since some of the wrestling resulted in faces in my crotch…..*cough, cough*. Ah what’s a Sakura viewing party without sexual abuse I ask??
Anywho, I will post pictures soon – once I filter out the really dirty ones (and save them for my own personal collection) – because the beauty of Sakura is really something that should be shared.
I have also developed a theory as to why the Sakura blooms so beautifully each year – perhaps it is all the drunken Hanami party vomiting that serves as a fertilizer…..
