A nap a day......
Today I discovered that the reason why my female supervisor is frequently nowhere to be found in the staff room on days when we have no class. I just figured she was keeping herself busy elsewhere but as it turns out she's actually been napping in the school library. Yep, napping. A woman after my own heart. She told me this because today all the female teachers gathered for lunch in the library to say goodbye to the home ec teacher who is retiring this year. I commented on what a nice place the library is -- so warm, clean and quiet -- and she responded that it was the perfect place for a nap. When I started laughing and she only smiled, I realized she was being serious. At this point my jaw dropped and I slapped her on the arm and yelled: "Sensei! Why in the hell didn't you tell me sooner?? You mean I could have been napping all this week??". She laughed at the violence of my response since I am usually fairly subdued at school, and just told me that now I know. Well yes now I do know. There are also VCRs and TVs in the library and she said it was ok to bring in and watch rentals. Man, this is my third week without classes. This information would have been so much more useful 3 weeks ago when I was contemplating self-mutilation via blunt objects due to boredom. Better late than never though....
So I am a little high-strung today because my Iaido tournament is this Sunday! It's so intimidating going to events like that here. Partially because Iaido is a Japanese martial art and so you just know the Japanese are gonna be good at it, and partially because I still don't friggin' understand most of what they are saying. It's a little frustrating having to deal with those nerves on top of the usual nerves of competition. Oh well. My Iaido girls were reassuring me today that I will do well and that they are coming just to cheer me on! Jen is also coming to watch, even though it means she has to sacrifice her Saturday night to wake up at 4 am on Sunday. Well at least I'm all set on the cheerleading front....
Wish me luck!
